Not more than 15 mintues after having her in our care, this little girl came to life. She was greeting everyone with a wagging tail, especially kids and couldn't get enough of the dogs around her. She may hesitate upon a first meeting due to her lack of socialization so may need to be approached slowly. Don't worry though she'll warm up VERY quickly. She has a great soft coat with beautiful expressive eyes. Meadow is quite the little ball of energy so will need regular exercise and would thrive in an active family. Picture
William is one of the 3 month old lab/chow mixes. He is a spunky little boy who loves to play and romp around. He is very friendly and outgoing and would make a great fit with any family.  William is now living in Redwood City and will be growing up with the kids in the family.

Tommy (adopted 12/14/09)

Picture
Tommy is a 4 month old shepherd mix who was rescued from Bakersfield. He has been keeping his foster family busy with his puppy antics. Tommy's cute charm worked on his foster family as they have decided to adopt him. He is now living in Walnut Creek.

Tristan (adopted 12/14/09)

Picture
Tristan is a 2 month old dachshund mix. He is a sweet little puppy who is just beginning to learn the ropes. He is currently living with another dog and doing fine. Tristan found a home in no time, with a face like that it was no surprise. He is now enjoying life in San Francisco.

Buff (adopted 12/13/09)

Picture
Buff is a cocker spaniel mix who is estimated at about 2-3 years old. As in most cases with rescue dogs we can never really be sure about their exact age. Buff is a great guy who gets along well with other dogs and people. He loves to cuddle up with the family on the couch or anywhere else he is welcomed. He would fit great into any family. He even knows sit. Buff didn't have to look far as he found his forever home right where he started, in Los Altos with his foster family.

Jessie (adopted 12/8/09)

Picture
Jessie is a 9 month old lab/chow mix. Unfortunately she fell victim to the hard economy and her family could no longer afford to take care of her. Even though she has got the blue/black chow tongue and a slightly curled tail, this girl is all lab. Her bubbly and active personality along with her willingness to please all scream lab. She gets along with other dogs and can't wait to meet everyone she passes. Jessie found her new family while hanging out at a cafe with her foster parents and is now living in Alameda.

Petey (adopted 12/7/08)

Picture
Meet Petey! This gorgeous little 3 month old lab/pit is the only boy in his litter. He is a great litte guy who gets along with everyone and loves other dogs.  Petey is working on his basic puppy manners and seems to be doing well. He is coming out of his shell more and more everyday. Petey was adopted by the same family who adopted his sister Abby and will also remain in close contact with his other sister Mia.

Hatti (adopted 12/5/09)

Picture
Hatti is a 3 - 4 month old lab/border collie/pit mix who just arrived by plane from Bakersfield. She is a gentle, sweet little girl who loves to play with other dogs and really enjoys a good back scratch. Hatti was a volunteer favorite at the shelter but with so many dogs she was easily overlooked by adopters. It didn't take long for Hatti here. She easily won over the hearts of a great family who drove from Tracy to meet her. She now gets to go to work with her new mom and has a young boy to grow up with.

Shiloh (adopted 12/5/09)

Picture
Shiloh is a 6 month old shepherd mix. He has a great medium super soft coat with beautiful soulful eyes. He may be a little shy upon first meeting but once he opens up he is a bouncey playful puppy who also loves to cuddle. He is currently living with another dog and doing great. When Shiloh finally got the chance to get out of crate after his long day of traveling, one of the first things he did was run to some nearby bushes to go to the bathroom. That is always a good sign for possibily being house trained. Shiloh is now adjusting to his new life in th Easy Bay.

Bourbon (adopted 12/4/09)

Picture
Bourbon is a beautiful 7 month old aussie/rott. Well at least that is what the shelter labeled him as. He looks much more like a Bernese Mountain Dog mix to us. He has a beautiful wavy coat that is so soft you wouldn't believe. He is on the submissive side and will gladly give you his belly for a good rub. He also is a "leaner." If you're standing next to him he will surely lean on you for comfort and of course a good pat. He gets along great with other dogs and has been great with everyone he has met. Bourbon found his wonderful family who came up all the way from Salinas. They instantly fell in love with this great guy.

Frankie (adopted 12/3/09)

Picture
Meet Frankie, a 7 month old lab/shepherd mix. Frankie was relinquished to shelter by his previous owners for being too big for apartmart living. Poor guy, and the sad thing is he is not even that big! He is a little on the thin side but will probably be in the 30lb pound range at a healthy weight. Frankie is a sweet dog, who greets everyone with a wagging tail. It seems he is house-trained and even knows some basic commands. He is great in the house and loves to lay at your feet. He'd make a great foot warmer on these cold winter nights. He loves playing with other dogs and when he first arrived that's all he wanted to do. Frankie has found a great family in Redwood City and now has some young kids to play and romp with.

Hannalee (adopted 12/2/09)

Picture
Hannalee is a 1 year old lab mix. The shelter staff and volunteers couldn't say enough good things about her. When walking through the crowded noisey shelter all she wanted to do was go say hi to every animal she passed. She can be a little shy with new people, but will warm up quickly. Now that she is out of the shelter she will probably become more out going rather quickly. Hannalee is one lucky girl who will remain with her foster family in Walnut Creek.

Ginji (adopted 11/30/09)

Picture
Read her blog @ http://ginjiblogg.blogspot.com/

Ginji is a friendly, playful and energetic eight month old Golden Retriever mix. It is hard to tell exactly what breeds are in her, but she also probably has some Lab and Basenji blood. She is about the fastest dog we have ever seen and has the slender frame of a Basenji. Ginji's foster mom has fallen in love with her endearing and loyal personality. Ginji sleeps peacefully next to her foster mom's bed every night and gets along well with her current friends - a tiny Dashcund puppy and another golden retriever companion. Ginji loves to stop and play with every dog she meets while on her walks, and has great leash manners. She learns quickly and seems to be fully potty trained. Ginji would make a great new member of the family and would do best in a home with a fenced yard where she can run freely. Ginji has found that perfect companion who is willing and able to give her what she needs to adjust to her surroundings. She is making a great new start in San Jose.

Foxy (adopted 11/25/09)

Picture
Foxy is a loving, 1 year old female terrier mix (imagine a basenji/jack russell mix... we know, "unique") rescued from being euthanized at the Los Banos shelter. She's very good with people, including children.  Probably because of a lack of training and socialization during puppyhood, Foxy does have some issues interacting with other dogs.  With submissive dogs and young puppies, she does very well if introduced to them properly and can live with them in the same household.  However, as a very strong alpha personality, Foxy cannot be placed in a home with another dominant dog.  Foxy is medium sized at about 25 lbs, potty trained, and crate trained, which means she is used to going into her crate to relax. Like a good terrier, Foxy has ocassional energetic playful bursts, but for the most part is even-keeled and very loving.  Her favorite pasttime is running up and putting her head in your lap and looking at you with her big brown eyes so you will shower her with affection. Foxy has found a perfect home in American Canyon and will surely make a great family member.

Malcolm (adopted 11/25/09)

Picture
Hi!  My name is Malcolm, and I am the most endearing pit bull mix you will ever meet.  I am about six months old and have a blocky head and large frame, but once you get to know me, you'll realize I'm really like the Jolly Green Giant.  I am very goofy and like to pounce pillows and dog toys for fun - if you lean down near me, and I am in a playful mood, I may even pounce on you!  I also get along with just about any living creature that walks the earth, including kids, other dogs, and all kinds of people.  I walk well on a leash and even know how to sit down.  I bond instantly with other people and dogs and love affection and warmth.  Whenever it is time for a nap, I like to find my current best friend, another pit bull mix, so I can lie on her - so much comfier than sleeping on the floor (check out the cute photos!).  I am a very loyal and sensitive dog.  Just a raised voice will make me lower my head several inches and hang my head in shame.  Despite my goofy appearance, I am as smart as a whip and have pretty much mastered potty training.  I will be a very easy dog to teach. Malcolm has found his new home and is now living in San Francisco.

Apple (adopted 11/25/09)

Picture
Apple is a stunning 4 month old shepherd mix. Just look at those markings! She arrived in San Francisco on Saturday from Bakersfield. She is quickly adjusting to her new foster home and is proving to be a great house guest. She gets along great with the family's other dog and is a happy loving girl. Her sweet mellow personality will make her a great fit for any family. Apple found her new home just in time for Thanksgiving. She is now living in the North Bay.

Toby (adopted 11/23/09)

Picture
Little Toby was rescued off the euthanasia list at the Bakersfield shelter, and it did not take him very long in his San Francisco foster home to show his appreciation!  Every night, Toby greets his foster mom when she walks through the door by showering her with puppy kisses.  He is quite the acrobat too and has an amazing agility and sense of balance that becomes obvious when he gets into his playful moods.  Toby loves to sit right next to his foster mom as straight and still as a little dog statue while she cooks dinner.  We can't figure out whether he just likes to be around her or whether he is really hoping for some fallen scraps (probably the latter, but from his good manners, you would never guess he was begging).  This little gem of a gentleman has also been great with other dogs and even cats.  If Toby were a human, he could be described as the "sensitive guy."  Just raising your voice around this little guy when he is doing something naughty makes him stop in his tracks immediately (it's made it very easy to train him - in fact, Toby is nearly potty trained and sits on command).  Although Toby is only about fifteen pounds now, at three months old, he will probably get a little bigger.  At the same time, Toby's frame makes us pretty confident he is going to be a small to medium sized adult.  Although the shelter listed Toby as a pit mix, we think it is a mistaken breed listing.  Toby looks much more like a cross between a Jack Russell and Basenji, or even a Bull Terrier, which bears no relation to the pit bull breed. Toby has finally found that perfect home in Menlo Park and even has another dog to paly with.

Abby (adopted 11/23/09)

Picture
Abby is an adorable lab pit mix three month old puppy who arrived from Bakersfield as the most rambunctious and playful of her three littermates.  Fearless and extremely friendly, this little gal was rushing up to every dog and person in sight and wagging her tail. Unfortunately, within twelve hours of Abby's arrival, in the early hours of the very next morning, Abby's foster dad woke to find her struggling to breathe.  After he rushed her to the emergency room, she was diagnosed with a severe pneumonia.  Based on how quickly it had progressed and how severely her lungs were blocked (the doctor said he could not even hear her heartbeat, her breathing was so labored), the doctor estimated a 60% chance of survival even with hospitalization.  Although Copper's Dream successfully pleaded with the hospital to extend an extremely generous nonprofit discount, Abby's total bills have still run up to $1200 and continue to grow.  Abby has made a great recovery and is back to old self. She has also found a great home and is now living on the Peninsula with a great loving family.

Emma (adopted 11/22/09)

Picture
Emma is believed to be a five month old dachshund mix. It took her a few days to fully adjust to her new foster home, as all the love and attention she was getting was quite new to her. She is now doing great and loves nothing more than to spend time with them. It is easy to see that she wants to be your little lap dog and cuddle, but she needs to be able to it on her own time. With a little time she will warm up and make someone a great companion. Emma needs a special person who is willing to give her the time she needs to feel fully comfortable in her new home. She is very comfortable with other dogs and warms up to them fairly quickly. Emma has found that patient household in San Francisco.

Zilla (adopted 11/22/09)

Picture
Meet Zilla (short for Godzilla), a 3 month old male lab/pit-mix puppy. Zilla is about 30 lbs and has darling floppy ears, a short black coat, white paws and cute white blaze on his chest. He is a big cuddler and enjoys curling up on the couch when he's not romping and chasing his friends at the dog park. He is currently being fostered with an 8 month old bloodhound mix and a cat. He interacts very politely with the cat, and shows great social skills with the dog. Zilla's life before coming to Copper's Dream is unknown, so some of the most ordinary things in life are pretty scary. He can become pretty submissive when scared or confused. He will need someone who is understanding of this and give him the time he needs to fully adjust. But, Zilla is INCREDIBLY willing to learn and LOVES to please -- he was potty trained, comfortable with doors/gates, and learned how to socialize well enough to go to the dog park (30+ dogs), all in 2 days. He is a very responsive little guy who has SO MUCH potential, and is also very gentle with kids. Zilla's foster family did a great job of turning this little guy into a fearless, outgoing little pup who now lives happily in San Francisco.

Rollie (adopted 11/16/09)

Picture
Rollie is 3 year old rough coated collie mix. You would never guess he is three, since he very much still looks like a puppy. Just look at that sweet, innocent face. Rollie is a huge lover who can't get enough of hanging out on his foster parents' laps. He is quickly learning his basic commands and seems to be potty trained. He loves to run and play outside and has been getting along great with the playful pup in his foster home. He is a sweet, very laid back, snuggly dog who would fit in anywhere and seems to love everyone he comes in contact with. Rollie is now living in a warm, happy home in Palo Alto.

Penny (adopted 11/15/09)

Picture
Penny is a cute little 3 month old lab/pit mix - the only brown and white one of her litter!  She is an outgoing little girl who is curious about everything. Penny has quickly found a home with a great family and is now living care free in Oakland.

Mia (adopted 11/15/09)

Picture
Mia is an adorable 3 month old lab/pit mix who arrived from Bakersfield with two sisters and one brother on Saturday, November 7.  She and her littermates had been at the shelter over a month before they were rescued.  These lucky dogs were exposed to parvo from a puppy in a nearby kennel who came down with the disease, but amazingly, Mia and her siblings did not catch the virus.  After their quarantine ended, the puppies did not have long until they were placed on that week's euthanasia list.  Lucky for the pups, Copper's Dream decided to take them in.  Mia is as gentle and lady-like as her beautiful name suggests.  She is mostly black with small patches of white and a white-tipped tail.  Her foster mom had studied her photo so closely, that she knew exactly which puppy to go for on the day the transport arrived!  She is super friendly to everyone she meets, even young children. She also plays well with both big and small dogs and is catching on to potty training really fast. Mia has now found a loving home in San Mateo where she is winning over everyone she meets.

Mr. Wiggles (adopted 11/15/09)

Picture
Mr. Wiggles is a 1 -2 year old chihuahua mix. He sure didn't get that name for nothing, this little boy sure can wiggle with joy and excitement. Mr. Wiggles came to us from the Los Banos shelter where he was found as a stray. He was picked up with a collar one so at some point in his life he was a loved family member, and boy does it show. He absolutely loves everyone to death, both adults and children. He also gets along well with other dogs. Mr. Wiggles found his forever home right where his new life after Los Banos started. His great foster family has decided he's not going anywhere.

Boedi (adopted 11/14/09)

Picture
Little Boedi was one of the pups who came from Lindsay along with his sister Lilly. He is about 8 months old and believed to be a Cocker Spaniel mix. His outgoing playful personality among other dogs made him an instant hit with the dogs in his neighborhood. He is a curious little guy who enjoys exploring this whole new world. His is adjusting to all the new things in his life, like stairs and the sound of the garage door opening, fairly quickly. It seems he has probably never been socialized with young children, since he showed quite a bit of fear upon his first encounter with them. He would probably do best with older children at this point, but watching how quickly he has overcome other new obstacles in life, it should only be a matter of time. He loves to lay his head on your lap for a good pet and wiggles with joy and excitement when greeting the people he knows. He can be a little cautious upon meeting new people, but will quickly warm up if given the chance. He has quickly learned 'sit' and is eager to learn more. Once he gets going he does great on a leash and is a perfect little angel when riding in the car. Little Bo would make a great fit into any household. Bo was lucky enough to find that great household at our Palo Alto Whole Foods event. He has a great little girl, and another child on the way, to spend the rest of his life with.

Jasper (adopted 11/14/09)

Picture
Jasper is a three month old dachshund/min pin mix who arrived on our transport from Lindsay. This quiet mellow little guy is an ideal lap dog. He is lucky enough to go to work everyday with his foster mom and spends hours at a time sleeping on her lap as she works away. He seems to get along well with other dogs and would make a great addition to any household.  Jasper found a great home in Mountain View with a young boy who he quickly will make his new best friend.

Dexter (adopted 11/13/09)

Picture
Meet Dexter! He is a 8 month old shepherd/lab mix who arrived on Saturday from Bakersfield. Dexter is still coming out of his shell and may be a little shy right now. He is currently living with a toddler and another dog and seems to be doing great. He showers everyone in the household with kisses when given the chance. He is slowly learning how to be a puppy again, and will romp and play for short periods of time. Dexter's foster family fell in love with him so he gets to remain happily in Silicon Valley.

Gracie (adopted 11/13/09)

Picture
Gracie is an adorable 6 month old shepherd mix puppy. Although she was on the brink of being put down at the Bakersfield shelter, she quickly forgot all about her month long stay in the shelter when arriving in the big city of San Francisco. Grace's resilient and independent personality makes her adjust very well to big change... well, except for her fear of stairs! Gracie now lives with two canine friends who she gets along well with. However, because Gracie appears to have more of an alpha personality, she will do best in homes with more submissive dogs. Gracie loves people and is very sociable. She loves running up to her foster mom after work and offering her paw to say "hello." Gracie is also very smart and has already figured out to sit from watching her canine companions. Gracie is an entertainment show all by herself in the yard, chasing sticks and leaves and dragging rocks around like dog toys. This little pup is good at keeping herself engaged! Gracie can be very energetic, but also knows how to relax on her dog bed. She will be great as a family dog. Gracie has found a great family and is now living happily in Los Gatos.

Lou (adopted 11/9/09)

Picture
Lou is an older pug mix at about 7 years. He made it on our transport from the Lindsay shelter just in the nick of time. The only owner Lou had ever known recently passed leaving Lou feeling lost and alone. To make matters worse, there was no one to care for him so he was brought into the shelter. Lou was not very comfortable with the situation, which is understandable, and was having a bit of a rough time. That is until he got to his foster home and was able to feel comfortable enough to show his true personality. Lou is a total love bug and loves to just lay and cuddle. Since he is an older fellow he would do best in a quiet home with someone who loves to cuddle as much as he does. He also gets along well with other dogs so another laid back pup would be fine. He also is good with cats. Lou has found a great family to spend the rest of his days with and even has a new doggie playmate.

Kent (adopted 11/6/09)

Picture
Little Kent, a six month old dachshund mix puppy, was saved from being euthanized at the Bakersfield shelter.  Kent is as sweet as can be around other dogs and loves to play with his best canine friend Ginji (read profile above).  In fact, he does not seem to be scared of large dogs, as he also lives with another large Golden Retriever that he gets along well with.  Unfortunately, little Kent is quite fearful of humans and will need a lot of love, patience, and training to overcome these fears.  He did not allow his foster family to touch him for several weeks and would run if they tried to approach him.  It is unclear whether he was simply not socialized properly or was actually abused by his previous owners.  Now, after many weeks of trying to gain Kent's trust, Kent's foster family can successfully pet him.  We are overjoyed to report that Kent has found the perfect family who is willing to work with him and give him the time he needs to adjust.

Chocolate (adopted 11/5/09)

Picture
Chocolate is a five month old chocolate lab mix who arrived just the other day from the Los Banos shelter. He loves to show his affection by showering you with kisses and rolling over for a nice belly rub. While in the house he has been a very gentle and mild-mannered guy. He gets along get with everyone including children and loves the company of other dogs. Chocolate would make an excellent companion for any family. Chocolate, now Samson, found his great forever family and if now happily living in San Francisco.

Miss Lady (adopted 11/1/09)

Picture
Miss Lady is a great little chihuahua-corgi mix with reddish tan and blonde colored hair.  She weighs about 15 pounds and is two years old.  Miss Lady was rescued from being euthanized at the Bakersfield shelter, along with her five week old pup, Bear.  Miss Lady is a true sweetheart.  She loves to lie in your lap, and you can tell how much she enjoys being petted by the relaxed and happy grin on her face.  Miss Lady also loves belly rubs.  Miss Lady gets along with adults, kids, and other dogs, so she should be an easy transition into your household.  Miss Lady has been adopted by her current foster family.

Jelly (adopted 10/25/09)

Picture
Jelly is a sweet black 9 - 10 month old Chow Chow mix.  She was rescued from the Lindsay shelter on the date of his scheduled euthanization. Due to budget constraints, the Lindsay shelter planned to close down and had no choice but to euthanize all of its animals.  Copper's Dream Rescue took 11 of the pups from the shelter including Jelly.  Jelly has a nice temperament, and loves people. She also appears to be good with other dogs.  She has a beautiful puppy face and chocolate brown eyes, and often looks up at you, hoping for a pet.  Whenever Jelly lies down, she immediately crosses her paws like a little lady.  Jelly will make a great companion for her lucky forever parent. Jelly has found a great family to spend the rest of life with and quickly became the new best friend of a young boy.

Trevor (adopted 10/25/09)

Picture
Trevor is a two month old black lab/terrier mix. He came in from Lindsay, CA along with his sister. He is a great snuggler who loves to give kisses. He gets along with other dogs and even cats. He also is doing great on his potty training. He loves to explore new things, since there is so much out there for him to see. Trevor's great personality would make him an easy fit into any household. Both Lily and brother Trevor have predominantly Labrador features. Trevor also found a great home with a nice couple at the San Francisco Pet Pride Day.

Lily (adopted 10/25/09)

Picture
Lily is a two month old lab/terrier mix who came to us along with her brother. She is a great little girl who is super sweet and loves to cuddle. She gets along great with other dogs and cats. She walks well on a leash and has been making great progress on her housebreaking. She is a happy little girl who would make a great addition to any family. Both Lily and brother Trevor have predominantly labrador features. Lily found a loving home at San Francisco's Pet Pride Day.

Julius (transferred 10/24/09)

Picture
Julius has been tranferred to another great rescue, so if you are interested in him please visit their website. He can be found at Noah's Friends Animal Sanctuary, www.noahandfriends.org. Julius is a great big German Shepherd/Husky mix with a huge heart to match. He is approximately two years old and a great big love. Julius got out of the Lindsay shelter just in time.  He is friendly with other dogs and loves people to death, he just wants to be a part of everything. Don't let his large frame intimidate you, as he is super gentle for his size. Julius will need a strong owner who is experienced with large breed dogs, so he can brush up on his basic manners.

Daisy (adopted 10/22/09)

Picture
Daisy is a nine month old cocker spaniel mix who arrived from the Lindsay shelter along with her brother, Bo. She is a sweet little girl who gets along great with other dogs. She has discovered the best place to lay is of course in the kitchen, no crumb goes unnoticed. Lilly didn't have to wait long for a great home, since her foster family decided to adopt her. She now lives in Oakley along with another dog.

Big Red (adopted 10/22/09)

Picture
"Big Red" was rescued from the Lindsay shelter on the date of his scheduled euthanization. Due to budget constraints, the Lindsay shelter planned to close down and had no choice but to euthanize all of its animals.  Copper's Dream Rescue took 11 of the pups from the shelter, including Big Red. Big Red is a one-year old light red gentle giant.  He is also a shelter favorite.  This pup is very gentle, mellow and calm, with people and other dogs alike.  All the way back from the shelter, Big Red soundly slept on the back seat of the volunteer transporter's car.  When he arrived at the drop-off point, he happily went with whatever volunteer wanted to walk him. It was noticed that if you stand by Big Red, he gently leans against you, hoping you'll pet him.  The folks at the shelter called Big Red a Great Dane mix; his frame is smaller than a Great Dane, however. He looks more like a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. He will make a wonderful pet for anyone looking for a big dog. Big Red now lives happily on the Peninsula along with two young children.

Rambo (adopted 10/20/09)

Picture
Rambo is a super cute two month old pit/aussie mix. Copper's Dream rescued him from the Lindsay shelter, just before they shut their doors. Even though he is only two months old, he has had a rough start to life. Poor Rambo was struck by a car, but luckily only suffered some scrapes and bruises. He is a great friendly little guy who would fit into any family. Rambo was adopted by his loving foster mom and has made a full recovery.

Cannon (adopted 10/15/09)

Picture
Meet Cannon, a 4-month old lab/pit mix who is a total sweetheart. Cannon was rescued from the Los Banos shelter, where he was scheduled to be put down the next day. He is a darling, affectionate, playful little guy, and quite a gentleman. He lives with other dogs and cats and gets along with them all great. He also loves to curl up and cuddle on his foster mom's lap. Cannon will probably be under 35lbs when full grown. Cannon now has a place to finally call home and is settling in nicely with his new family in Los Altos.

Barney (adopted 10/11/09)

Picture
Barney is a six month old shepherd-dobie mix who just loves human affection.  He is happy sitting in his foster mom's arms for hours at a time.  Barney also loves playing with other dogs - his favorite is "keep away," although his doggie companions don't always like playing that game with him!  Barney has probably not lived with other dogs before, because he is a little grumpy when it comes to sharing his toys, but with firm training, this puppy learns very quickly that he needs to be more generous around his canine friends.  Barney is wonderful around people and children and his eagerness to please will make him easy to train. Barney managed to win over the hearts of his foster parents, which seems to happen a lot around here, and can now rest assured that he will have a home of his own forever.

Olive (adopted 10/10/09)

Picture
Olive is a three month pit mix who arrived from Bakersfield by airplane along with her sister and brother. She quickly adjusted to her new surroundings and enjoys spending time with another dog and cat in her foster home. She is a happy, sweet and playful puppy who will make anyone a great companion. Olive was quickly adopted by her foster parents and now gets to remain the best of friends with her doggie and kitty buddies.

Moses (adopted 10/5/09)

Picture
This beautiful boy, a 3 month old lab pit mix,  arrived by pane from Bakersfield along with his two sisters. Moses is an outgoing friendly guy who gets along with all dogs and people he meets. Moses found a great home in Fairfax in no time. He even gets to go to work with his dad everyday and everyone at the office adores him.

Penelope (adopted 10/5/09)

Picture
Penelope is a three month old lab/pit mix who was flown up from Bakersfield. She is a sweet girl who gets along great with other dogs and is as gentle as can be. She is a little shy but will quickly warm up and loves to spend hours curled up in your lap. Her coat is a beautiful reddish brown and her little black muzzle with dark eyeliner makes us think she may have some Rhodesian Ridgeback in her. Penelope was snatched up by her foster parent who immediately fell in love with sweet personality.

Smokey (adopted 10/3/09)

Picture
Smokey is a very friendly five month old lab mix. He is pretty calm for his age and loves to cuddle and get hugs from everyone. He is still learning what a dog's life is all about, and is catching on to the game of fetch pretty well. He is still a little cautious around his food, which can be very common for dogs who had to fend for themselves. It is also something that with time and patience he can easily overcome. He is crate trained, doing well on his house training and is sleeping straight through the night. Smokey now spends his days playing with two teenagers in his home in Oakland.

Ginger (adopted 10/3/09)

Picture
Ginger is a four month old lab mix puppy that was rescued from being euthanized at the Bakersfield shelter.  She is a little beauty, with golden brown fur and light green eyes.  Ginger loves to give puppy kisses, washing your entire face with affectionate licking.  Ginger also loves to play, and pounces and chases her toys like a cat.  Ginger has a very loving and sweet personality and attracts a lot of attention just walking down the street, because she likes to approach people with a wagging tail.  Although the shelter listed Ginger as a lab and pit mix, her dominant features are of a lab and she has the personality of a lab too!  Ginger will be very easy to train, since she is a smart girl and eager to please.  She is also wonderful with kids and currently lives with three of them.  Ginger is eagerly waiting for her forever family... which we are happy to report she has found in Palo Alto. She will be kept busy with three young kids and two cats to play with.

JoJo (adopted 10/3/09)

Picture
JoJo is a playful, well behaved and fairly relaxed little puppy, also a member of the Golden Retriever-Bull Terrier litter (read descriptions of siblings for more information on these breeds).  She is a little shy at times, but she is really coming out of her shell quickly with the love that her foster family is showering on her. JoJo is now living in Fremont and has a young child to play with everyday.

Wendel (adopted 10/3/09)

Wendel is a three month old Chihuahua mix who loves to cuddle. He has been exploring San Francisco with his foster sister, Lucy, and has been loving every minute of it. Wendel is a very smart little fellow who is already learning to stay and even sits nicely at each corner before crossing the street. He is great with kids and loves giving sweet little kisses. His big heart and eagerness to learn would make him a great addition to any family. Wendel quickly found his home at our adoption event and is now spending his days in Fremont.

Ralphie (adopted 10/3/09)

Picture
Meet Ralphie, a four month old Shepherd/Golden Retriever mix! This happy go lucky pup is a total love. He gets along great with all his neighborhood buddies and even tries to play with the cat. He has been settling into his new foster home with no major problems and is doing well learning some basic commands. He is quite the gentleman and knows when his doggie playmates leave it is time to settle down. It has also been reported that he rarely barks when he is in the house. Ralphie gets to remain best buds with his Samoyed playmate, since his foster parents have decided to keep him.

Lucy (adopted 10/3/09)

Picture
If you are looking for a lap dog, then Lucy is your gal. This loving, playful, three month old Chihuahua Terrier mix, loves to cuddle. Her outgoing personality always makes her a hit when meeting new dogs and people. She has been great with dogs of all sizes, adults and even children. There is no little dog syndrome here. She was a little taken aback with all the new surroundings San Francisco has to offer, but is quickly coming around. Overall Lucy is a very relaxed and mellow girl. Lucy found her forever home at our adoption event in Palo Alto and is now living with two young children and a young doggie playmate.

Precious (adopted 10/1/09)

Picture
Precious is a 4-month old shepherd mix who was rescued from Bakersfield. The stress of being in an over crowded shelter and long, packed car ride didn't phase her at all. The next day she was enjoying a concert in Golden Gate Park with her foster mom. This friendly, sweet and social girl caught the eye of her future forever parents rather quickly. She now lives in Foster City and has a doggie playmate to spend her days with.

Paloma (adopted 10/1/09)

Picture
Meet Paloma, a nine month old shepherd mix, with a huge heart. Paloma was rescued from the Bakersfield shelter and was given a second chance at life here in the Bay Area. She quickly landed in a great foster home who had another dog for her to romp around with. It was no surprise that Paloma's foster  parent decided to make her a life long family member. Paloma now spends her days kicking back at the beach surrounded by people who love her.

Fin (adopted 9/30/09)

Picture
Fin is a five month old shepherd mix who arrived from Bakersfiled along with his sister and brother. He is a sweet and loyal dog with a great personality. He is adjusting to life in San Francisco and seems to be really enjoying the hustle and bustle of city life. He gets along get with all others and would make anyone a awesome family pet. Fin will remain in San Francisco since his foster mom fell in love and has decided to make his stay permanent.

Tiberius (adopted 9/30/09)

Picture
Tiberius is a five month old shepherd mix who has the most soft and fluffy coat ever. He is quite the cuddle bug and loves both people and dogs alike. Tiberius had a rough start in life and shortly after making his way out the shelter, when are supposed to get better not worse, he was diagnosed with pnemonia. Tiberius didn't have to look long for his forever home, because after watching his strong will to survive his foster parent decided he wasn't going anywhere. Tiberius is now a happy, healthy little guy living in San Francisco.

Stella (adopted 9/30/09)

Picture
This beautiful girl just came up from Bakersfield and it took her no time to fit in with her foster family. She loves to romp around in the backyard and play with everyone she meets, even the small kids at her foster home. She is even making good progress on her potty training after only a few short days. What a smart girl! She is still unsure about the leash, but at only about 5 months, she still has plenty of time to work on that. Stella will for sure make a great addition to any family. Stella quickly found her forever home, which is no surprise with a face like that, and is happily settling in.

Acie (adopted 9/29/09)

Picture
Acie is a four month old German Shepherd lab mix. She is a very playful and happy girl who is friendly to both the dogs and humans she meets. She loves to cuddle and will happily fall asleep while you are watching tv, reading or working on the computer. Acie will be a large dog, since she is already at 36lbs. She will make anyone a great family dog. Acie's foster family has decided to provide her with her permanent home and she is enjoying it very much.

Nala (adopted 9/28/09)

Picture
Nala is a three month old black lab mix who won the heart of her foster mom is San Francisco rather quickly. She only spent a few days with us before it was decided that she wasn't going anywhere. She has fit in with the family perfectly and is learning what is is like to be a dog living in the city.

Sadie (adopted 9/28/09)

Picture
Sadie is a three month old female, another member of the Golden Retriever-Bull Terrier litter of 7.  Her most distinctive feature are her enormously large ears and give this playful pup a delilghtfully whismical look.  Bull terriers are a breed that people are often unfamiliar with, but they are described by the American Kennel Club as "playful and clownish," "an exceedingly friendly dog with a sweet and fun-loving disposition," and likened to a "three year-old child in a dog suit."  This is also the breed of the dog that makes recurring appearances in Target commercials with a red ring around its eye.  The Bull Terrier bears no relation to the pit bull and is a separate and distinct breed.  Sadie has convinced her foster mom to adopt  her and is now a city girl. All the sights and sounds of San Francisco can be pretty scary for such a little girl, but she is adjusting, especially with the help of her doggie friends.

Hercules (adopted 9/28/09)

Picture
Meet Hercules, a loving five month old shepherd-lab puppy who was found with his two siblings, Hope and Fin, at a swap meet.   Hercules was taken to the pound in Bakersfield and was to be euthanized when Copper's Dream rescued him.  Hercules was very timid and shy when he arrived after his five hour journey, but with the patient encouragement and love that his foster mom has showered on him, he is coming out of his shell and will run over to people he knows and wag his tail.  Hercules has a very docile, gentle personality and will likely be a  submissive member of the pack.  Hercules was another one of our pups who won over his foster family and will remain to get showered with their love and affection.

Diego (adopted 9/26/09)

Picture
Diego is a 4-month old shepherd/golden mix pup who was part of our Bakersfield adoption program. His family choose him from the shelter's euthanasia list, and it was love at first sight. Diego fit perfectly into their home which includes three kids, another dog and a cat. He never gets bored or lonely here. He has even formed a special bond with one of the kids and gets to sleep with him every night.

Lucky (adopted 9/23/09)

Picture
Meet Lucky!  Lucky is a 3 month old female Daschund-Dobie mix.  She has the beautiful markings of a Dobie, but the floppy ears and frame of a daschund.  This adorable, well-behaved puppy would make a great addition to any family.  Lucky has gotten along with all adults and children she has met so far, and especially loves to hang out with the litter of Golden Retriever-Bull Terrier Pups that she traveled up from Bakersfield with.  While Lucky cried for her life on the short car ride back to her foster home, we quickly realized it was just because she had to go to the bathroom!  This little lady might very well be potty trained already. Lucky sure was quite the lucky lady when she found her forever home.

Rocky (adopted 9/20/09)

Picture
Hi!  My name is Rocky!   I am a 2 month old lab-pit mix and such a little baby that people stop in the streets to pet me.  I am so full of love - I will make the most loyal, smart, and fun-loving companion for my forever family.   In fact,  I have just found my new forever family, and am so grateful!

Hope (adopted 9/20/09)

Picture
Hope is a loving five month old shepherd-lab puppy.  She and her brothers, Hercules and Fin, were rescued from Bakersfield when their time was up.  She, like her brothers, was very timid and shy when she arrived after the five hour journey to the Bay Area, but with the patient encouragement and love, she has really come out of her shell.  She has a very docile, gentle personality and will likely be a submissive member of the pack.  Hope has just been adopted by a wonderful family with a 10 year old girl, and she will enjoy a long, happy life with them!

Ellie (adopted 9/19/09)

Picture
Ellie is a three month old member of the Golden Retriever - Bull Terrier Litter.  Half of the puppies in this group of 7 are more "bull terrier" looking, while the other half are more "golden retriever" looking.  Ellie looks a little but more bull terrier, but in our opinion, it is the perfect mix, because she is nothing but adorable.  Ellie was very shy at first, but under gentle, nurturing care, she has really come out of her shell and thrived.   She has also discovered how fun the beach is, and the woods, and learned to say when she needs to go outside to do her business. She is also good with toddlers, cats, and other dogs. All around a perfect dog! Ellie now lives with her wonderful permanent family in Silicon Valley!

Fawn (adopted 9/18/09)

Picture
Fawn is a three month old member of the Golden Retriever - Bull Terrier Litter and just as her name suggests, she looks as gentle and sweet as a newborn fawn would.  Her soft, downy fur is also reminiscent of a fawn.  Half of the puppies in her litter of 7 are more "bull terrier" looking, while the other half are more "golden retriever" looking.  We think Fawn might be exactly in the middle! Fawn was fostered by a loving family in San Francisco, and was then adopted by her foster mom's sister, who had spent time with Fawn and had fallen in love with the little sweetheart.

Maggie (adopted 9/16/09)

Picture
Hi, I am Maggie, and I'm around 4 to 5 months old.  I am a brindel lab mix who loves attention and I get along well with everyone.  I have really pretty chocolate-brown and tan stripes on me, and big adorable ears!  I love trips outside where I can meet other people and dogs, and also because I get pet by almost everyone who sees me!  I was rescued from the Bakersfield pound, where she I on the euthanasia list, but I am safe now with my wonderful foster parents, who I persuaded to adopt me.  I now live in San Francisco with a terrier mix who doesn't like me at the moment, but whom I am trying to win over next...

Puma (adopted 9/14/09)

Picture
Puma is an adorable 3 month old lab pit mix whose curiosity and genuine warmth will capture your heart.  She is extremely well behaved, plays well with other dogs (even dogs 10x her size!), and rarely barks at anything.  Puma quickly learned simple commands (sit and shake), so her new family will have an easy time training her.  Her energy and willingness to play will definitely keep her new family entertained as well.  This sweet and affectionate brindle colored puppy was adopted by a loving family in Sunnyvale whose two girls instantly fell in love with Puma.  Puma will now spend the rest of her days spoiled as the youngest "child" of her new family.

Russell (adopted 9/12/09)

Picture
What do you get when you cross a Jack Russell with a Pit Bull?  An amazingly "calm" terrier puppy.  Russell defies the stereotype of the terrier breed.  Don't get us wrong - he does have his moments of playful puppiness, but for the most part, Russell is very well behaved, gets along with other dogs and people, and is just a very sweet little guy.  Also, though he is listed as a pit - jack russell cross by the shelter, his dominant features are of a terrior.  He weighs about 20 pounds now and given that he is already five months old, he will probably be roughly the size of a Jack Russell.  Russell captured the hearts of a family in Albany and his new playmate is a lab mix four times his size!

Leena (adopted 9/12/09)

Picture
Leena is the other "golden retriever" looking pupy from the Bull Terrier Mix litter.  Reports from her foster mom are that she was scared of new environments at first, but then got used to city living quickly.  The first time she was taken to the dog parl, she was initially shaking and not moving, but when she saw the other dogs and people, she got very excited and curious. She eventually started to run up to every person, wagging her tail, licking their hands and clearly enjoying the attention.  She fully trusted all people.  With the other dogs she couldn't decide between being scared and VERY excited. The excitement won. Even though she tried to hide in the grass sometimes, she never got really submissive.  In fact, when a big dog sniffed at her nose a little bit too long she did a little bark at him to let him know she didn't like it.  Then she fell in love with a big Golden retriever's very fluffy tail and decided it was her new toy.  Luckily he was very patient letting her pull in it.  Leena is now the well-loved member of a family in Modesto.

Cheddar (adopted 9/12/09)

Picture
Cheddar is a cute Bull Terrier/Golden Retriever mix pup who was rescued with the 9/4/09 Bakersfield transport.  Bull terriers are a breed that people are often unfamiliar with, but they are described by the American Kennel Club as "playful and clownish," an exceedingly friendly dog with a sweet and fun-loving disposition," and likened to a "three year-old child in a dog suit."  This is also the breed of the dog that makes recurring appearances in Target commercials with a red ring around its eye.  Cheddar is a mellow little pup who likes to play but also has nice manners.  A family in San Jose fell in love with her, and she now romps with two young children who adore her.

Shasta (adopted 9/11/09)

Picture
Shasta will be the center of attention in her new family.  This 3 month old lab - golden retriever mix was rescued the day before her euthanasia deadline, and even after a long, five hour journey from Bakersfield to San Francisco, she was ready to run right out of her cage and play!  Unlike many Bakersfield pups, this little girl was not shy at all.  Quite the opposite, she quickly realized she had to learn to share her toys with other dogs (especially the alpha lab-chow dog in her foster's household).  After the first few days, this spunky little girl fell right into line though.  Among humans, Shasta is very sweet and docile.  She lets you take her food away while she is eating and even ignores you if you put your fingers in the bowl.  She will do great with kids and other dogs that are older or bigger than her.  With pups her age and size, she will do fine too, but her alpha personality will probably shine through.  This little girl wants to be boss among her doggie companions!  Shasta now lives in San Jose.

Lola (adopted 9/11/09)

Picture
Lola is one of the two more "golden retrievier" looking puppies from the Golden  Retriever-Bull Terrier litter rescued from being euthanized at Bakersfield on the Labor Day weekend transport.  She has fluffy golden fur and a beautiful face.  Lola is very sweet and gentle; she is great with dogs of all sizes.  She even has 6 toes on her back paws!  Lola also has a cute white "tie" on her chest.  Lola was adopted by a family in Oakland.

Chickpea Charlie (adopted 9/10/09)

Picture
Chickpea Charlie is a sweet white and tan 2 year old Chihuhua mix.  He weighs only 10 pounds, but he is an energetic guy with a big heart.  He loves to play and gets along well with people, dogs and cats.  His foster, who immediately fell in love with the little guy observed that he "loves attention and  wants to please his human."  He was rescued from the Los Banos shelter, where he was on the euthanasia list (though the pound delayed his euthanasia date several times in order to give this little guy a chance to get adopted).  Luckily for little Chickpea Charlie, his cuteness ended up persuading his foster parent's neighbor to adopt him and he now lives permanently in Walnut Creek.

Macie (adopted 9/7/09)

Picture
Macie (right) is a beautiful German Shepherd mix 6 month old puppy that was rescued from Bakersfield.  Macie was a very well-mannered and gracious pup as soon as she got into her new household.  Lucky for her, her border collie pup companion (left) took to her right away, and the two became inseparable almost immedately... so much so that Macie's foster mom quickly realized she could not split the two up!  Macie now lives in Livermore with her foster mom turned adopter.

Zelda (adopted 9/7/09)

Picture
Zelda is an adorable Border Collie mix pup who was lucky enough to be rescued from Bakersfield on 9/4/09 before the massive weekend euthanasia.  She is about 4 months old and gets along well with other dogs, cats, and kids.  Playful and good natured, she is now the latest addition to a happy family in Pacifica.

Cookie (adopted 9/4/09)

Picture
Cookie, a beautiful two year old German Shepherd was rescued from the Los Banos shelter 24 hours before she was going to be put down.  Although Cookie is a very large dog and might look a little scary, she is actually one of the most calm and gentle dogs you'll ever meet.  In fact, her temperament was so good that the shelter used her as the "tester" to see if new arrivals were dog aggressive.  Wow, what a job a good personality can land you!  Even though Cookie is an adult, reports are that when she plays with other dogs, you would think she was only a puppy.  As is not unheard of here at Copper's Dream, Cookie ended up making her foster dad fall in love with her, and he quickly decided he just could not (and did not want to!) live without her.

Domino (adopted 9/2/09)

Picture
Hello!  My name is Domino, and yes, I am as cute as I look.  I am a three month old lab-pit puppy.  My new family loves the fact that I am a walking work of art, with black and white speckles all over my body, and a tell-tale black spot right above my left eye.  My future owner will never confuse me with another dog at the dog park!  Aside from my adorable features, I am also a very relaxed and docile puppy.  I now live in Morgan Hill, am showered with love, and have a big yard all to myself!

Bowser (adopted 8/31/09)

Picture
Bowser the 10 month old chocolate lab-pit mix was a clown at heart.  He did not have the luxury of being exposed to much - everything he encountered was a new adventure, whether it was new smells, textures or friends.  Bowser made his foster parents feel young again by giving them a new appreciation for simple things.  Everything he touched became a game, but he was also good at knowing when it was time to go to his bed and take a break.  Bowser got along very well with all dogs, even small dogs.  But as is true with any ladies' man, Bowser seemed to especially like females his size.  A family would not be complete without the positively irresistible Bowser.  Maybe that's why Bowser ended up capturing the heart of his foster parents, who decided to adopt him themselves.  Bowser now has the run of the house with his buddy and fellow lab-pit mix "Jake" in Pacifica.

Bridget (adopted 8/30/09)

Picture
Bridget, the three month old Brindle colored puppy, met her new forever family as her foster mom was taking her for a walk down the street.  Little did Bridget know that Fate would be shining on her that day.  Her adopters, a young engaged soon to be married, fell in love instantly.  After a follow up meeting, they knew they could never live without Bridget.  Bridget is now occuping the prized position of "only child" in this happy household living in San Francisco.  Let's hope her sister, Puma, who is her spitting image, also gets adopted soon!

Teemo (adopted 8/29/09)

Picture
Teemo was a three month old shepherd mix puppy with the best manners and most gentle disposition a new adopter could have hoped for.  Teemo played happily with all dogs she met, including the toy Pekingnese that she was housed with in foster care.  Teemo's forever home is now in Foster City, where she lives with two young children who adore her.  Teemo also lives right next to a dog park.  She is the latest addition to a family that just finished mourning the loss of their 15 year old German Shepherd, who died about a year ago.  This lucky little pup, who will be spoiled rotten, is wondering how her fortunes changed so drastically, and so quickly!

Darla (adopted 8/29/09)

Picture
Darla, a lovely 8 month old puppy, had a wonderfully playful personality and liked to dance and scamper across the room in search of imaginary squirrels and birds.  She got along well with other dogs and liked to entice them into playing with her with gentle, dainty jumps.  Darla also loved people, including infants - she washed the face of the six month old baby in her foster home, much to the baby's delight!  Although Darla could be quite energetic, she could also relax, lying down peacefully at your feet for hours.  This lucky Australian Shepherd / Border Collie Mix ended up in "doggie paradise," and was adopted by a retired couple living on 65 acres of land near Santa Rosa.  Darla acquainted herself with the first 12 acres the first night, but reports from her foster family are that she still has a lot left to explore...  Happy trails, Darla!

Brownie (adopted 8/26/09)

Picture
Brownie was a friendly and easygoing 7 month old puppy.  Although she was listed by Bakersfield as an Akita Chow Chow mix, we could only vaguely see the Chow Chow in the subtle wrinkles above her eyebrows and her delightful curled tail.  But we saw no sign of the Akita.  Brownie looked to us like a Golden Retriever - Lab mix.  She had the personality of those breeds too!  Although she could be very playful in the presence of other puppies her age, Brownie also enjoyed relaxing and even sometimes gave her fellow puppies a look of "My goodness, don't you guys ever get tired?"  This happy dog now plays with two kids age 10 and 7 everyday in her home in Sunnyvale.

Huey (adopted 8/12/09)

Picture
What do you get when you mix a German Shepherd with a Corgi?  A big dog's spirit in a little dog's body.  Huey was the most adorable puppy we have seen in a while.  At approx. 35 pounds, he was a small to medium sized dog, but he would think and act like a big dog.  Huey was gentle, curious, and very sweet with other children, adults, and dogs of all shapes and sizes.  Don't let Huey's Corgi body and shorter legs fool you - he could actually run pretty fast when playing with other dogs or chasing birds, which was a favorite past time of this 6 month old puppy.  Huey was playful and affectionate (liked to follow me all around the garden), but at the same time, he also knew when to relax on his bed.  Huey was rescued off the euthanasia list at Bakersfield thanks to the extremely generous efforts of a pilot who volunteered his services to fly Huey from Bakersfield to Novato in his private plane.  To see more photos, go to Picasa: http://picasaweb.google.com/coppersdream1/HueyCopperSDreamRescue .

Dixie (adopted 7/27/09)

Picture
Dixie, along with her three puppies, were rescued from being put down in Bakersfield. She loved to play with our other dogs, a ten month old puppy and a seven year old lab chow mix. It was obvious to us from her playful demeanor that Dixie was not more than about a year old herself and had probably gotten pregnant in her first heat cycle, which can happen as early as six months. At about 50 pounds, Dixie was medium sized but was also a strong gal. However, she learned to walk on leash very well and also learned how to sit. She was very affectionate and liked to put her head in your lap or give you her paw. She was always rolling over for belly rubs too. Dixie was listed as a Collie and German Shepherd mix by the shelter, but thought she looked much more like a Lab mix.  She was adopted into a wonderful home--she and all of her puppies found the same happy fate!

Boris (adopted 7/20/09)

Picture
Boris was a very quiet and calm dog.  He was very mellow and loved to be petted.  In just a few days, he started following me around the yard and would wag his short tail (we think it was docked) whenever he saw me.  Boris loved tennis balls--we bought a ChuckIt and thew him tennis balls to tire him out.  He was also a great jogging partner too.  (But he would hog the smoothest path for himself!)  Boris had a beautiful head--he looked like a purebred lab, but probably had some other breeds in him because of how large his head was.  Boris loved children and would act mellow around them, but once you showed him a tennis ball, he'd take off like the wind!  Boris was adopted into a loving home in Santa Clara, where he'll play with the neighbor's dogs everyday and visit beaches and lakes.

Bear (adopted 7/18/09)

Picture
Bear was Miss Lady's little puppy.  This adorable pup was only 5 weeks old when he was rescued with his mother from Bakersfield.  An amazing foster home in Belmont drove 8 hours roundtrip to transport the "Bakersfield Bunch" from the shelter.  Thanks to them, many dogs who were about to be put down were saved and placed into loving homes.  They fostered Miss Lady and Bear, as well as many other rescue dogs.  Bear was adopted by his foster family on July 18th.  Miss Lady is going to remain in her loving foster home until her permanent home comes along.

Chestnut (Fergie) (adopted 7/15/09)

Picture
Chestnut was exactly that...a beautifully brown-coated little pup. She was 8 months old, rescued from Bakersfield shelter, and would prance around the house like a little nymph.  This little sprite would capture your heart in no time. The shelter labeled her as a Chocolate Lab...we thought there was likely some Lab in her, but also maybe some Pointer (long snout) and possibly some Sharpei (cute wrinkled face) and even a hint of Terrier (her build and coat). She was very well adjusted, meeting and playing with other dogs with ease and loving all kinds of people. She was still a young pup and therefore enjoyed playing. Chewing was a favorite past-time for this little girl, so chew toys were a necessity to have around.  Chestnut was adopted into her loving foster home in San Jose!

Jester (adopted 7/12/09)

Picture
Jester was an adorable 6 month old puppy.  She was rescued from Bakersfield on 6/25/09.  Jester was listed as a Lab/Pit mix, but it is obvious that she is a mix of many more breeds than just that.  She had the cutest half white, half black face.  Her stomach was also spotted - she had hilarious markings.  Jester was good with cats and loved children.  To exercise her, I would run around a large field and she would happily chase after me.  When she caught up to me, she would roll over for a belly rub.  Jester loved to chew on bones, whether they were real or fake.  She loved squeaky toys, squeaking them nonstop until we thought we were going to go crazy!  She was a playful and energetic puppy, but would calm down as soon as you starting petting her.  Jester was adopted into a wonderful home in Santa Cruz, next to a dog-friendly beach!

Jet (adopted 7/6/09)

Picture
Jet was the brother of Max and Mazzy and puppy of Maggie.  This cute 5 week old puppy was rescued, along with all oft his family, from Bakersfield on 6/25/09.  All four family members were about to be euthanized, but a very generous and loving foster home in Santa Rosa allowed Copper's Dream to rescue all of them!  Jet was a cute little puppy with a brown muzzle, like his brother Max.  He was the skinnier of the bunch, but was equally adorable.  Unfortunately, Jet came down with pneumonia during his stay with his foster, causing everyone to worry.  Luckily, he recovered well with antibiotics and was soon as good as new!  Thank you to those who donated--the public and Max, Mazzy, and Jet's adopters--to help us pay the $1,500 vet bill.  Jet and his siblings were all adopted into great homes!

Max (adopted 7/6/09)

Picture
Max was an adorable 5 week old puppy.  He was rescued on 6/25/09, along with his brother Jet, sister Mazzy, and mother Maggie.  Like any young puppy, Max was a very energetic boy and would play with everything!  He was eating solids when he arrived, but he didn't know what a treat was! Max, Jet, and Mazzy were all well-cared for by their mother Maggie and foster home.  The "Mom and Pup Trio" were fostered in Santa Rosa for a few weeks before being adopted into loving homes.  A very happy ending for a family that would have all been euthanized.

Sheba (adopted 6/29/09)

Picture
Sheba was a playful, lovable, and well-adjusted 9 month old black lab/retriever mix. She was saved from euthanasia from the Bakersfield shelter on 6/25 and lived with a foster family in San Francisco. Sheba had a gorgeous black coat, just slightly longer than that of a purebred lab's, and the most endearing, gentle, and playful personality.  Sheba was one of those rare dogs that all dog owners dream of.  She was great with kids, people and other dogs and always even-keeled and calm.  At the same time, she showed that she was still a puppy when playing with other dogs.  Sheba is now living with a loving family in Mountain View.

Mazzy (adopted 6/25/09)

Picture
Mazzy was one of the 5 week old puppies Copper's Dream rescued from Bakersfield on 6/25/09.  She was pulled along with her mother Maggie and two brothers, Max and Jet.  This lucky family was rescued from being euthanized and was placed with a foster home in Santa Rosa.  Unfortunately, Maggie and Jet came down with pneumonia, caused by the kennel cough they obtained in the shelter.  With costly medical treatment, both puppies pulled through and were soon as good as new!  Things were looking up, except for the fact that Copper's Dream was left with a $1,500 vet bill.  Thank you to the generous donations from the public and from Mazzy, Max, and Jet's adopters.  We are happy to report that all of the puppies are still healthy and are doing well in their new forever homes.  Mazzy's foster adopted her; the other two puppies found wonderful homes as well.

Frannie (adopted 6/23/09)

Picture
Frannie was an adorable 8 month old Golden Retriever/Chow mix rescued from Los Banos.  She had beautiful golden fur that was soft and silky.  She also had a huge wrinkly face that could make people melt when they saw her walking down the street.  Frannie loved to be around people and other animals.  She loved to romp on the grass and play with her rope toy.  She was also a little mischievous and liked to steal things (like socks and rolls of toilet paper) when she felt that she wasn't getting enough attention.  Frannie would never bark, only whine when excited.  She would come when called and was even house trained already!  Overall, Frannie was very well-behaved and entertaining.  She got adopted into a wonderful home in Berkeley.

Molly and Peewee (adopted 6/20/09)

Picture
Molly was a Cocker Spaniel/Chihuahau mix with beautiful wavy black hair.  She had a sweet face with brown eyes and was approximately two years old when we rescued her.  She was very gentle and liked to sit by my side or at my feet and be cuddled.  She allowed others to hold her pup, Pewee. She was a good momma and stayed close by her pup.  She was very mellow and didn't respond when another larger puppy (not hers) grabbed her tail and the hair of her neck.  Her tiny pup, Peewee, was a cream colored short haired pup about 2 weeks old and.  He was adorable, even though he didn't look anything like his mom.  Molly and Peewee are now living out their lives together with a great family in Los Gatos!

Riley (adopted 6/20/09)

Picture
Riley was an adorable tri-colored "brindle" dog.  Her beautiful coat of brown, tan, and black swirls covered her entire body, including her tail!  Although she was labeled as a Pit mix by the Bakersfield shelter, she obviously had much more than just Pit Bull in her.  Her long thin muzzle suggests that she may have been part Terrier or Collie.  Riley was very playful, as most puppies are, but she could also be very calm and composed.  She never barked or whined and got along with other dogs as well as people.  Riley loved laying out in the sun and relaxing as well as sleeping.  She had the adorable trait of being content to sit in your lap for long periods of time given that you lavish her with affection.  However, she was also an independent dog and didn't mind exploring on her own.  Riley was adopted at our first ever adoption fair at the SF SPCA!

Taize and Mocha (adopted 6/20/09 and 6/19/09)

Picture
These two girls, adorable 3-month old Lab/Pit mix puppies, were rescued from Bakersfield via an amazing couple, who loaded their RV up with 49 dogs and dropped them off at various Northern CA cities! Their descriptions were labeled "last chance for rescue".  They were very sweet and rambunctious pups, loving the fact that they were out of the Bakersfield shelter and learning the ways of the world. Taize, the lighter of the two, got adopted at our first ever adoption fair at the SF SPCA!  Her darker colored sister, Mocha, found a wonderful home in the East Bay shortly afterwards.  These two sisters, once about to be euthanized, are now growing up in loving homes in the Bay Area.

Princess Laya (adopted 6/14/09)

Picture
Princess Laya was a true gem.  About four months old, she was so cute that she made strangers stop in their tracks and coo over her.  We could never quite figure out what breeds made up her adorable look.  Our best guesses were pit, lab, and probably even some shepherd.  Laya was very intelligent and picked up on commands and directions with eager delight.  As her name reveals, she was a true explorer and very curious!  She has also been friendly with all of the fellow dog friends she has met.  She loved to snuggle up with her foster mom wherever her foster mom happened to be - maybe she sensed it was her foster mom's generous efforts to jump in and foster animals right before the Bakersfield transport that saved her life.  Laya now romps in the beaches and forests of Santa Cruz with a retired couple and gets to enjoy frequent visits from their children and grandchildren!

Moshi (adopted 6/10/09)

Picture
Moshi, a 30 pound Lab/Beagle mix, was rescued as a member of the "Bakersfield Bunch" -- Copper's Dream's first-ever transport of over 20 rescued animals from Bakersfield to the Bay Area. Moshi was a 10 month old puppy who delighted in making trips to the yard, where she would pick up all sorts of things and drop them dutifully at her foster mom's feet, including branches, rocks, and even bits of flowers and plants she had dug up (much to foster mom's consternation).  Indoors, Moshi was a very calm and gentle dog who rarely barked or howled, unlike many Beagles.  She got along great with all dogs and people alike.  Moshi loved birds and squirrels, and we have a sneaking suspicion that if ever let off leash, she would chase them with enthusiasm.  Can't hide all the beagle in her!  Overall, Moshi was an extremely entertaining and playful dog.  She was adopted out to a young man in San Francisco who had moved apartments just so he could have a dog.  She now frolicks by Fort Mason and Chrissy Fields every day - a wonderful ending to Moshi's story!

Brady (adopted 6/7/09)

Picture
Brady was waiting for a lucky break the day Copper's Dream showed up at the Bakersfield shelter with a huge cargo van and a half dozen crates to take home the fortunate few that had been selected to leave on the rescue transport.  He arrived at the shelter the victim of an aggressive dog attack, and just as his wounds were finally healing, he was scheduled to be euthanized that night.  Brady traveled nearly five hours up north, where he was adopted by a loving couple in San Francisco the very next day - they had fallen in love with the handsome two year old Golden Retriver - Chow Chow who had a habit of standing up on his hind legs and giving people "hugs" by putting his paws on their shoulders and nuzzling them in the face.  Now he'll be romping with other canines in the many dog parks in the city.

Lilah (adopted 6/7/09)

Picture
Lilah was a gorgeous Golden Retriver / Chow mix rescued on Friday, May 22 from the Los Banos Animal Shelter.  The shelter estimated her age at 1-2 years old.  This beautiful dog had golden blond fur like a Golden Retriever, but more of the facial features of a Chow.  She was very well behaved and loved to be around people.  She also did very well with kids and strangers and loved to explore her surroundings and investigate.  Her playful, calm, and gentle demeanor would have made her a good match for any family.  Lilah was energetic at times, but also loved to lie out in the sun and just relax.  Lilah lived for tummy rubs and chasing after birds and squirrels, which might also be why her favorite toys were "squeakies."  Lilah now lives with a family in San Jose who showers her with affection.

Rocket (Tashi) (adopted 5/25/09)

Picture
Rocket was labeled as a Rottweiler mix when we rescued her from the Los Banos shelter, but we weren't convinced...  After some Internet research, we discovered this adorable puppy's tri-color pattern, tan eye spots, and tan and white socks suggest that she has Bernese Mountain Dog blood.  Rocket had the kind of temperament that every dog owner dreams of - good with kids, strangers, other dogs and even felines!  Yes, she went right up to them and started wagging her tail in greeting just like she does with people and dogs.  From watching our own pit bull puppy and lab mix, Rocket learned to "sit" in a matter of minutes and also quickly picked up returning to us when we blew a whistle.  Rocket has now been renamed "Tashi," which is a greeting that means "May auspicious things come to this environment."  She was adopted by a loving couple in Santa Cruz and has the run of a 9,700 square foot property along with her companion "Trufi," an Australian Shepard mix.  A pretty good change of fortune for this little pup!

Bouncer (adopted 5/19/09)

Picture
Bouncer is an energetic and entertaining Border Collie mix.  He is tennis-ball crazy - he even learned how to fit two tennis balls in his mouth!  (Though if he doesn't concentrate hard enough, one falls out and he has to work to get it back into his mouth.)  True to his name, Bouncer loved pouncing on his squeaky toys and had the good habit of never ripping apart even his soft toys.  Bouncer also has the endless energy of his breed.  It was impossible for me to tire him out no matter what I tried.  Having him chase my dog wasn't enough; my dog would get tired long before Bouncer did!  Bouncer was a great jogging partner as well.  He keeps pace with his human partner and lasts much longer!  After I fostered Bouncer for a few days, his previous foster home decided to adopt him.  Bouncer is now living with a large and loving family in Foster City and vists the nearby dog park every day!

Lucy (adopted 5/13/09)

Picture
Lucy is an adorable 8 month old Shar Pei mix puppy.  This wrinkly pup's markings seem to indicate that she also has some Rottweiler in her.  Lucy's cute face, noticeably her eyes - one blue and one brown - make it hard to believe that she was going to be put down.  This pup has boundless energy!  After chasing other dogs for close to an hour, she showed no signs of fatigue while my dog, Goldie, had long since laid down to take a nap.  Lucy was incredibly intelligent.  She learned how to sit immediately, and learned "down" in just a day or two.  We had to keep her inside after her spay operation and she never had a single accident (of course, we took her out very often, so that helped.)  Lucy ate her food with gusto and enthusiasm, gulping it down in just minutes!  She was adopted out to a wonderful family in Cupertino.  Hopefully the two children will be able to tire her out!

Tyson (adopted 4/17/09)

Tyson was kept with a loving foster home in Oakland until he was transferred to me.  While in Oakland, Tyson was living with an active family with five kids - probably the reason he loves kids and almost seems to prefer them to adults.  After having Tyson for just one day, he started following me around the yard whenever I went outside.  He opened up and started loving human affection; he would burrow his head in my lap and making amusing grunting noises whenever someone was petting him.  After two walks, his pulling problem was corrected and he became a very well-trained dog.  When Tyson's adopter came to meet him, the two instantly fell in love.  Tyson fell asleep in her lap and even started snoring!  Tyson is now living with a loving owner in San Francisco; he goes to the beach every weekend and gets to play with another Pit mix!

Buddy (adopted 4/11/09)

Buddy is a Pit mix with the cutest wrinkled forehead I've ever seen.  When we first saw him, however, he was trembling badly and refused to move.  We had to pick him up and put him inside the car so we could head home.  But after a nice bath and lots of human affection, Buddy came out of his shell - he learned how to be a dog again!  After meeting my motherly dog, Goldie, Buddy soon grew into a confident and playful puppy.  During his early walks, Buddy didn't know what to do with himself, so he often sat down in the middle of the sidewalk, refusing to budge.  Whenever this happened, we would simply call Goldie over and he would get back up and follow her.  After a few days, Buddy learned how to walk on a leash perfectly - without ever stopping to lie down.  He also learned how to sit and go down very quickly.  Buddy's progress continued until you would never guess that he was once a fearful and shy puppy.  Buddy is now part of a loving family in Alameda with two kids to romp with!

Clyde (adopted 3/16/09)

When Clyde first arrived in our apartment, I have to admit that I was a little bit scared.  All I really knew about Clyde was that he was probably going to be euthanized by the Oakland shelter, because he was starting to go crazy in his cage – literally.

The staff told me the problem was that he was a large dog and had an enormous amount of energy.  Most importantly, he had not been adequately socialized with other dogs as a puppy.  As a result, he did not know how to meet and play with other dogs properly.  Out on the streets, Clyde would get so excited when seeing another dog on the street that I could only control him by giving him the “sit” command, but even then, he would obediently sit while barking like a panicked seal at the other dog and owner.

Yet as each day passed with Clyde, we slowly, but surely began to see him change before our very eyes.  Clyde’s intelligent, inquisitive and loyal nature also won over our hearts.  He formed a bond with us very quickly--he liked to poke his head behind the shower curtains to see what we were up to and lie by our feet under the kitchen counter as we cooked dinner.

One of our last days with Clyde will forever remain etched in my mind – it was a Sunday afternoon when we decided to take him to Fort Funston for the first time.  We were anxious at how he would react to meeting so many dogs, but with praise and encouragement every time he approached another dog on leash, Clyde did not have a single negative encounter.  Once on the beach, without other dogs in sight, we decided to let him off leash for the first time.  Completely free from any restraint, Clyde raced around the sand with sheer joy and pleasure.  Clyde was like a dog reborn – his spirit set free.

That night, the call came unexpectedly – a man had recently lost his own Shepard mix to cancer and after grieving for a month, was looking for new companion.  We had only had Clyde for two weeks and we had prepared ourselves to have him as a foster dog for several months as we waited for the right family.  After a meet and greet late that night, Scott did not need any time to think it over.  “He’s definitely the one,” he said.  We made arrangements to transfer Clyde the next day.  Monday morning, I kissed Clyde on the forehead for the last time and tried to memorize how he looked – the oversized head and enormous furry paws that would make him seem like an overgrown puppy for the rest of his life.

Even now, weeks later, it is hard not to feel sentimental when I think back to Clyde, especially when I remember how my own spirit had soared to see his tortured soul set free amidst the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean.  The memories are a constant reminder of why we work so hard at Copper’s Dream to give dogs a second chance to live.

Max and Libby (Skunk)

Max and Skunk, a sister-brother pair, were world class escape artists.  They managed to get out of any dog run or backyard, but after being picked up by the Tracy Animal Shelter twice, their owner just decided they weren't the trouble of going down to the shelter and bringing them back home.  The weekend before July 4, 2005, Max and Skunk were scheduled for euthanasia, because the shelter was expected a large influx of animals who would run away durning the loud fireworks.  It was Max and Skunk's lucky day when Copper's Dream was notified and drove three hours to Tracy and back to save their lives.  As soon as the shelter workers let Max and Skunk off leash, the two adult dogs raced around like puppies.  Skunk raised her rump in the air, wagging her tail, while Max rushed at her.  We instantly fell in love with the dynamic duo.  Once back home, we saw firsthand how cunning the two were at escaping their confines.  But after one chewed up leash and one chewed through screen door later, we finally started outsmarting the pair.  An Australian Shepherd/ Alaskan Husky mix, Skunk had the endearing habit of howling like a fire engine to greet us every time we returned home.  Her brother, Max, was the type of regal-looking canine that would attract attention wherever he went.  Even though it took a lot of hard work, after hitting the streets for several days in a row, Copper's Dream was able to place both dogs.  Sadly, the two could not be placed together.  But Skunk found a new home in Mountain View with a new, energetic, Border Collie playmate, and Max headed down South to Los Angeles, where he now lives and roughhouses with a female German Shepherd… a happy ending to a potentially tragic story.

Negra and Dulzar

Negra and Dulzar have the honor of being the first ever Copper’s Dream rescues.  In the summer of 2005, we were informed by the Ukiah shelter that they had recently been inundated with lab mix puppies!  Sadly, the yellow lab litter turned out to have several pups with severe deformities in their tooth formation which the shelter veterinarian predicted would end up costing their owners thousands of dollars in surgery costs once they became full grown.  Though Copper’s Dream fought hard to be allowed to save them and raise the money for their operations, the shelter decided it would be best to put them down.  Fortunately, all of the puppies in the black lab litter passed their health exams with flying colors, and Copper’s Dream transported two of the tiny gems in a cardboard box three hours south to Cupertino.

There, the puppies were “adopted” by their new surrogate mother, Goldie, our family’s border collie mix, who proceeded to shepherd them around the yard to make sure the little gremlins didn’t get into trouble and who would lick and groom them with the same gentleness she used to shower on her stuffed animal toys.

Unfortunately, our family’s other dog, Gutley, a black lab mix herself, turned out not have a single ounce of maternal instinct in her despite the fact that she looked like the puppies’ real mother – in fact, we had to monitor Gutley initially, because the puppies persistence at trying to play with her would annoy her, prompting her to growl and snarl at them…

As is usually the case with puppies, Negra and Dulzar did not have to wait long for a home.  Within a few weeks, each had been adopted into a loving family – one in Fremont, who renamed their new family member “Cookie,” and the other in Napa Valley.
