Meet Mama Blue - Our Special Dog of the Month
Mama Blue is our special girl who is in urgent need of a special foster home or adopter. Mama is a 5- 6 year old pit mix who loves all people and even does great with children as young as one. She is a real love who just wants to curl up beside you or even lay in your lap if allowed. She respects her caretaker and has great house manners. She is also crate trained and walks well on a leash. Due to Mama's unfortunate past she should be the only pet in the house at this time. We know there is a special place for her out there and don't want to let her down. We want her to know there is a life better than what she had and we are determined to give her that.
She was confiscated from a home down south near Bakersfield along with her three pups. One pup was adopted through the shelter but Mama and her two babies had run out of time. They spent over a month in the shelter waiting for the case against their previous owner to close. He was convicted of animal abuse/neglect. Copper's Dream agreed to take her two pups but after meeting Mama and being greeted with the biggest pittie smile ever, there was no way she was going to be left behind. Everyone was well aware of what her fate would be if Copper's Dream did not take her. One smile from the most loving and loyal dog you will ever meet was all it took, in the van she went on her way to a better life in SF. After observing Mama's behavior outside the shelter environment it is clear that she does not like some dogs. We have no idea what her life was like before she came here, but after speaking with some trainers it is believed that she is just extremely under-socialized. Basically she never knew life outside the yard she was rescued from. We only want what is best for her and are looking for an experienced owner/foster willing to share their love with an awesome dog. We even have dedicated experienced individuals willing to work with her on her issues for as long as it takes. Please consider giving Mama a chance. Once you meet her you will see just how special she truly is. A giant lap dog, who grunts, groans and ever snorts on occasion. What's not to love! Blue's adoption fees have been reduced to $100, as we are looking for that special home able to take this special girl. She has recently been spayed and her vaccinations are up to date. She is currently being boarded at Best Friends Pet Resort in Patterson, CA with the help of the volunteers at Westside Animals for Adoption.

Make a Donation to the Tiberius Fund on Behalf of Sugar Cookie (updated 2/4/10)
Sugar Cookie, named for her beautiful off-white coat and her sweet and loving personality, has probably faced enough hardship in the last few months to last her a doggie lifetime. Sugar was rescued off the euthanasia list at the end of October, when she was estimated at 11 months of age. However, on the day of her arrival in the Bay Area from Merced, we noticed she was limping. After a week of rest, Sugar made no improvement, so she was taken to the vet for xrays. The diagnosis was "damaged growth plates," a serious condition in which her bones had formed incorrectly and were rubbing against each other. Although much younger dogs may have been able to undergo surgery to realign the bones, the vet's prognosis was this type of surgey would have a low chance of success, because Sugar was nearly at adult age. Our vet recommended amputation of Sugar's front right leg as the only way to ensure that Sugar would have a lifetime free of pain and arthritis. After the vet's recommendation was confirmed by other vets and an orthopedic surgeon, Copper's Dream made the difficult decision to remove Sugar's leg. We are happy to report that after a two week recovery period during which Sugar was kept nearly immobile (see middle photo), she has bounced back to her old self. And just as the vet promised, Sugar plays, walks, and runs like any normal, four-legged dog. In fact, she has been even more rambunctious and energetic around the house since her recovery, maybe because the pain in her leg is now gone.
We are now seeking donations to cover the costs of Sugar's amputation surgery as well as a special home for this very special dog. When Sugar first arrived in the care of Copper's Dream, we looked into her large, soulful and slightly frightened eyes and promised her she would now be safe and loved for the rest of her life. We hope that with the help of a special family, we'll be making good on that promise to Sugar very soon. To adopt Sugar, please read her profile on Dreamin Pups and submit an application. To donate, please click on the button in the upper right of this page. Your generous contributions will be applied to the Tiberius Fund and will ensure that all animals receive the vet treatment they deserve.

The Lindsay Crew Has Arrived... (updated 10/18/09)
When rescue groups alerted Copper's Dream Rescue to the news that the Lindsay Shelter, about an hour north of Bakersfield, was shutting down due to budget constraints and that animals still left would all be euthanized on October 17, we knew we could not sit idly by... Although Copper's Dream initially only agreed to take three to four animals, when it became clear other rescue groups were full, we ended up taking every single dog that was unaccounted for - a grand total of 11! Including a nine year old pug mix whose owner had died and whose closest family relation dropped the dog off at the shelter and instructed the shelter to "adopt" or "immediately euthanize" - either one! Bakersfield Crisis Leads to Transport of Over 150 Animals to the Bay Area... (8/23/09)
When Bakersfield rescue coordinator Nicole Hardin requested that Debra McCraw of Animal Friends Rescue Project help them out, we knew the situation must have been pretty dire. As it turned out, due to terrible overcrowding at the shelter, which already receives 500 new dogs and 500 new cats every week, over 200 animals were scheduled to be euthanized on Sunday, August 23, 2009. Luckily for the many innocent lives at the Bakersfield shelter, Debra and Nicole were determined to do something about this crisis. Working together in conjunction with dozens of Bay Area rescue groups, including Copper's Dream, the two were able to rally volunteers and coordinate the details of a transport involving three commercial vans filled with over 150 animals. After the five hour journey, the animals arrived at their respective destinations in San Francisco and Sacramento. Of the 150, Copper's Dream was responsible for saving the lives of eight beautiful puppies thanks to the efforts of all our generous foster families and the amazing, last minute networking of Lee Kuhn. Volunteer as a Foster - Make a Dog's Dream Come True!
We are willing to work with all types of foster situations, including people who work full-time, who do not own their own home as long as they have permission to have a dog, or who do not have a yard. Fostering is a great way to see if adopting a dog is for you. We will cover all veterinary expenses; you will only have to pay for the basic necessities such as food. Every foster home allows us to save one more life!
